Webinar: The Role of Satellite in Building a Connected Africa
Space in Africa is hosting the third edition of its webinar series, “The Role of Satellite in Building a Connected Africa,” on 20 October 2023. Telecom industry professionals, government representatives, NGOs, academics, potential investors, students, international organisations, and the general public benefit from this webinar on African satellite technology. It offers insights, policy shaping, collaboration opportunities, and educational resources for various stakeholders.
Africa is a continent of vast potential yet faces a significant digital divide. While urban centres in Africa have made notable strides in internet access and connectivity, rural and remote areas still lack reliable access to the digital world. This disparity has implications for education, healthcare, economic development, and overall quality of life. Satellite technology has emerged as a crucial solution to address this digital divide. Satellites can cover vast and remote regions, offering connectivity in places where traditional terrestrial infrastructure is not cost-effective or feasible. They provide a means to bring educational resources, telemedicine, e-commerce, and global communication to underserved populations.
However, despite the immense potential of satellite technology, there is a need to raise awareness about its role in bridging Africa’s connectivity gap. Many stakeholders, including policymakers, industry professionals, and the general public, may not fully understand the capabilities and advantages of satellite technology in this context. Therefore, this webinar will explore how satellite broadband connectivity will drive the continent’s socio-economic growth and develop pathways, including remote areas and communities, to accelerate strides. This webinar will also discuss Africa’s under-connectivity and analyse how to provide strong connections on a continent where most lands are landlocked. Also, discussions will highlight how 5G networks can foster the creation of initiatives and programmes and ways of minimising the expenses and obstacles of adopting the network.
Webinar Objectives
- Educate: The primary objective of this webinar is to educate a diverse audience about satellites’ critical role in expanding connectivity across Africa. It will provide an in-depth understanding of how satellite technology works and how it can effectively reach remote and underserved areas.
- Showcase Expertise: The webinar will highlight Africa’s expertise in satellite technology and its contributions to addressing connectivity challenges in Africa. We will explore solutions, the current operational status of projects, innovations, and success stories in Angola and Nigeria, as well as regional initiatives.
- Engage Stakeholders: This webinar will foster meaningful discussions among industry experts, policymakers, and thought leaders. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we can identify common challenges, share best practices, and explore collaborative opportunities to advance connectivity initiatives.
- Promote Collaboration: Building on the discussions during the webinar, we hope to facilitate partnerships and collaborations. These partnerships may involve governments, NGOs, academia, and industry players, all working to leverage satellite technology to benefit Africa’s development.
