Namibia and China Announce Joint AI Satellite Project to Strengthen Space Cooperation

China and Namibia have taken a step towards deeper cooperation in space technology by announcing a joint artificial intelligence (AI) satellite initiative to strengthen Namibia’s technical capabilities in satellite engineering and space science. The announcement was made during the Namibian presidential delegation’s official state visit to China, where the Chinese satellite company STAR.VISION confirmed it had formally commenced the collaborative project following discussions with Namibia’s Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Hon. Dr Sanet Steenkamp.
Additionally, the initiative places significant emphasis on capacity development. According to STAR.VISION, the project will establish a framework for AI satellite development while providing Namibian researchers and students with practical training in orbital engineering and satellite technologies.
Building AI Satellite Expertise
AI-enabled satellites are becoming an increasingly important part of the Earth observation sector. By processing data directly onboard the spacecraft through edge computing, these satellites can rapidly identify events such as floods, crop stress, wildfires and environmental changes before transmitting only the relevant information to ground stations. This reduces bandwidth requirements, improves operational efficiency and enables faster decision-making.
To mark the announcement, STAR.VISION also released a high-resolution satellite image of Windhoek captured by its OSE satellite constellation, demonstrating the company’s Earth observation capabilities.
A Focus on Long-Term Capacity Development
The collaboration reflects Namibia’s efforts to strengthen domestic capabilities in satellite engineering and space science through international partnerships. By combining satellite development, academic exchange and workforce training, the project aims to equip local researchers with the expertise needed to participate more actively in future satellite missions.
If successfully implemented, the collaboration could contribute to Namibia’s long-term ambitions in Earth observation, AI-enabled satellite applications and space engineering, while further expanding China–Africa cooperation in the space sector.
