SANSA Hartebeesthoek Ground Station to Provide Critical TT&C Support for IM-2 Lunar Mission

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is playing a crucial role in the Intuitive Machines-2 (IM-2) lunar mission, providing tracking, telemetry, and command (TT&C) support from its Hartebeesthoek Ground Station. This support ensures the mission’s success by constantly communicating with the spacecraft as it journeys to the Moon.
SANSA’s Role in IM-2 Mission Operations
SANSA began tracking IM-2 shortly after its launch when the spacecraft entered the agency’s coverage area. The Hartebeesthoek facility will continue to provide TT&C services during the mission’s critical phases, including the Athena lander’s descent and surface operations on the Moon.
“Lunar missions like IM-2 are a unique opportunity for SANSA to showcase its capabilities and contribute meaningfully to the global space community,” said Tiaan Strydom, Acting Executive Director of SANSA Space Operations. “Our preparations for this mission are designed to ensure excellence and seamless support services for the contracted duration of the mission.”
IM-2: Advancing Lunar Exploration and Resource Prospecting
The IM-2 mission represents a significant step forward in lunar exploration, focusing on water prospecting and resource utilisation. According to Intuitive Machines, the mission is designed to demonstrate:
- Lunar mobility through robotic surface exploration
- Subsurface material analysis to detect volatile compounds
- Resource prospecting for water ice is a critical step in establishing sustainable lunar infrastructure
The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which aims to accelerate lunar exploration by leveraging commercial space companies. Data gathered from IM-2 will contribute to future human missions and the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable presence on the Moon.
Precision Tracking from SANSA’s Hartebeesthoek Facility
Lunar missions require high-precision tracking to ensure mission success. SANSA is utilising its 26-metre and 12-metre diameter antennas at Hartebeesthoek to maintain continuous contact with the IM-2 spacecraft. These antennas operate using high-frequency radio signals, ensuring accurate navigation and real-time communication as the mission progresses.
In preparation for IM-2, SANSA and Intuitive Machines conducted joint simulations and rigorous equipment tests to validate tracking and command capabilities and ensure seamless mission execution.
“Lunar missions are complex and costly; every phase requires precision and diligence. We are honoured that Intuitive Machines has placed trust in our capabilities to support IM-2, continuing our work from IM-1,” Strydom commented.
Strengthening South Africa’s Position in Global Space Operations
SANSA’s involvement in IM-2 aligns with its strategic objectives to:
- Enhance South Africa’s contribution to global space innovation
- Promote international partnerships in space exploration
- Expand its expertise in TT&C support for deep space missions
With a legacy dating back to the 1960s, the Hartebeesthoek Ground Station was initially established as a NASA tracking station and has since evolved into a critical hub for global space operations. It has provided TT&C services for satellites, interplanetary missions, and human spaceflight, reinforcing South Africa’s position as a trusted partner in the international space community. As humanity expands into space, SANSA’s capabilities will remain essential in supporting missions that expand scientific knowledge, unlock new exploration opportunities, and pave the way for sustainable lunar and deep-space activities.
