AfricaGIS Conference Kicks Off Today In Rwanda

AfricaGIS Conference, arguably the foremost gathering of industry leaders and policymakers focused on the application of geospatial technology in Africa, kicks off today at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Conference explores the role of innovations in geospatial information and its implication in addressing the 17 targets of the Sustainable Development Goals for an inclusive, prosperous and sustainable African continent.
The week-long gathering features keynote speeches by leading scholars, technical sessions with reports of the latest research outcomes as well as plenary and parallel sessions of oral presentations, poster presentations on topics such as capacity building, geospatial policy, programmes and projects. There will, in addition, be exhibitions of the latest products and services in geospatial science and technology.
The Conference is held every two years and is organised by EIS-Africa, a pan African non-profit organisation. This year’s edition is hosted by the University of Rwanda and supported by United Nations Economic Commission, United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) Africa, GMES in Africa, Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Digital Earth Africa. The event is sponsored by ESRI, Airbus, Geodyn Technology and Digital Earth Africa.
The speaker line-up include Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Musoni; Matthew Pennells, Head of Digital Transformation for Esri’s MEA Region; Sohail El Abd, General Manager of Esri Global for the MEA Region; Lee Schwartz, U.S. State Department’s 8th Geographer; Dr Tidiane-Ouattara, Space Science Expert and Coordinator for GMES & Africa Support Programme; Prof Kristen S. Kurland, Teaching Professor of Architecture, Information Systems, and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University; Prof. Alfred Bizoza, Associate Professor in Agricultural Economics from the University of Rwanda.
The AfricaGIS Conference and Exhibition series have become a flagship Geospatial Information marketplace in Africa. For the past 20 years, the series has contributed immensely to the development of skills and institutional capacity in geoinformation across the continent.
The last AfricaGIS which held in 2017 was sponsored by ESRI, AIRBUS and Servir West Africa while the organizing partners include AfriGEO, Group on Earth Observation, UN-GGIM:Africa, UNECA, EIS-Africa, Ethiopian Mapping Agency, ESRI South Africa, and CSIR.
