2019 Astronomy in Africa Science Business Meeting – Call For Registration And Grant Application
The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) is organising the Astronomy in Africa science meeting, scheduled to take place from October 10-11, 2019 at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The aim of the meeting is to create more awareness about the operations of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) within the science community and to highlight the growth of astronomy in Ethiopia. The meeting will be led by AfAS’ Science Committee and will focus on the role of AfAS as far as astronomy is concerned. It will also involve discussions on the science-related goals of AfAS and the development of a strategy for professional astronomy within AfAS.
This meeting will bring together African professionals in the field of astronomy and other stakeholders in the international astronomy community to discuss on scientific issues, consult on the science strategy of AfAS, deliberate on how they could be engaged in AfAS’ activities, and ultimately contribute towards the achievement of its vision and mission. Besides developing a business strategy for AfAS, the scientific meeting will also be used as a platform for creating partnerships and facilitating collaborations with international scientific bodies.
The Astronomy in Africa science meeting is hosted by the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) and co-organised with the East Africa Regional Office of Astronomy for Development (EA-ROAD) as well as the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MiNT). It is a continuation of the Astronomy in Africa business meeting that was hosted at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town from March 25-26, 2019.
The Science business meeting will involve a series of talks featuring invited guests, discussions as well as reflections on the science business strategy of AfAS, and interactive networking sessions that aim to stimulate conversations and scientific collaborations via the IAU Symposium. The potential participants of the meeting include: astronomers based in Africa, astronomers from the African Diaspora; astronomers from around the world willing to collaborate with African astronomers, astronomy instrumentation scientists and engineers; astronomy educators and communicators, Data scientists and ICT professionals; students, amateur astronomers related to all the above groups; relevant government officials, funding agencies ; relevant industry partners as well as other invited individuals and organisations who are interested in the development of AfAS.
In respect of this meeting, AfAS is accepting applications for grants from enthusiasts of science and astronomy across the African continent.
