GGPEN and ANPG Launch Project to Monitor Angola’s Inland Basins Using Satellite Data

Angola’s National Space Programme Management Office (GGPEN) and the National Agency of Oil, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) launched a project on Thursday, 3 September, to expand the use of space technologies in monitoring and managing the country’s oil sector, with an initial focus on sedimentary basins.

The project implements an agreement signed at ANGOTIC 2026 by ANPG Board Chairman Paulino Jerónimo and GGPEN Director General Zolana João.

At the launch meeting, held at ANPG headquarters, the GGPEN delegation was led by Edna Caposso, Deputy Director General for Administration and Finance, while the ANPG side was led by Lúmen Sebastião, Director of Exploration.

The launch marks a new stage in cooperation between the two institutions, consolidating the use of satellite data to support ANPG’s monitoring, inspection and management of petroleum resources.

The partnership builds on an existing collaboration in which ANPG has been using a technological solution that combines space data and artificial intelligence to detect and monitor oil spills along the Angolan coast. The tool provides continuous monitoring of maritime activity and flags potential environmental incidents, strengthening the response capacity of the agencies responsible for protecting marine ecosystems and overseeing oil operations.

Cooperation will now extend to other strategic areas, including the use of space technology to monitor sedimentary basins, opening further applications for Earth observation data in natural resource management and sector oversight.

The initiative reinforces GGPEN’s mandate to deliver space-based solutions to challenges across Angola’s economy, and demonstrates the role of satellite data in supporting decision-making, territorial monitoring and the sustainable management of the country’s resources.
