The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) has signed a cooperation protocol with SITAEL, an Italian company specialising in the production, development, and qualification of satellite products and subsystems, as part of its strategy to strengthen international partnerships in space technology.

Dr Maged Ismail, Chief Executive Officer of the Egyptian Space Agency, signed the protocol on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, at the agency’s headquarters, alongside Marko Molina, a representative of SITAEL. Several agency leaders and company representatives attended the signing ceremony.

The protocol aims to support innovation in space applications, develop capabilities in satellite and remote sensing fields, and explore opportunities for future joint projects. The agency affirmed that this cooperation aligns with its plan to enhance international collaboration and utilise space technology to serve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Building on Strategic Partnerships

This agreement follows a series of collaborations that EgSA has established to strengthen Egypt’s space capabilities and regional cooperation. During the NewSpace Africa Conference 2026 in Gabon, EgSA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Land Satellite Remote Sensing Application Centre under the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China to leverage satellite data for economic development.

Furthermore, the UAE Space Agency and the Egyptian Space Agency signed a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding during the 2025 NewSpace Africa Conference in Cairo. The agreement marked a critical step in deepening bilateral ties, with a focus on advancing space science, technology, and policy harmonisation.

Regional Collaboration and Joint Missions

In January 2025, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt and Kenya’s President William Ruto reaffirmed the strong ties between the two countries by signing a Joint Declaration for a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership. As part of this strengthened cooperation, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Egyptian Space Agency and the Kenya Space Agency, focused on collaboration in space exploration and the peaceful use of outer space.

This partnership yielded tangible results in April 2026 when Egypt, Kenya, and Uganda successfully launched the Climate Camera (ClimCam) payload to the International Space Station aboard the Cygnus NG-42 mission, lifted by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40. The payload, developed through collaboration between the Egyptian Space Agency, the Kenya Space Agency, and the Uganda National Space Programme, is hosted on the Airbus Bartolomeo platform attached to the European Columbus Module for the duration of its time in orbit.

Strengthening Institutional Capacity

The partnership with SITAEL represents Egypt’s continued commitment to building domestic satellite technology capabilities through strategic international partnerships. By collaborating with specialised satellite subsystem manufacturers, EgSA aims to enhance technology transfer, develop local expertise, and support the country’s broader space sector development objectives whilst contributing to regional space cooperation initiatives across Africa.
