The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) has successfully completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for its infrared thermal imaging system, which will fly aboard China’s Chang’e-8 lunar lander. The review was conducted in partnership with the China National Space Administration (CNSA) during a high-level Chinese delegation’s visit to Egypt.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation between the two countries in lunar exploration and further advance the technical integration of Egypt’s contribution to the Chang’e-8 mission. The achievement positions Egypt as a rising scientific and engineering partner in the global deep-space community. The PDR session was led on the Egyptian side by Dr Ayman Mahmoud, Head of the Central Department for Space Programmes, alongside EgSA’s engineering and mission development teams. Professor Bai Zhao Yu, Chief of the Chang’e-8 Mission Team at CNSA, headed the Chinese side.

During a series of intensive technical meetings, Egyptian engineers presented the system’s detailed design, performance specifications, and engineering readiness, demonstrating the payload Egypt will deliver for the mission’s maturity. Furthermore, discussions covered the mechanisms for integrating Egyptian and Chinese subsystems, testing and verification pathways, and joint operational plans to ensure full mission readiness ahead of the launch.

Both parties reviewed the technical interfaces and coordination requirements for the payload’s final development stages, reaffirming a shared commitment to meeting Chang’e-8’s mission timelines and scientific objectives. The sessions concluded with the signing of the Preliminary Design Acceptance Certificate, followed by an exchange of commemorative shields, symbolising the strength of the scientific partnership.
