The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) will host the 6th Space Economy Leaders Meeting (SELM6) from 1 to 3 September 2025 at Arabella, Hermanus, in the Western Cape. Convened under the framework of the G20, this high-level gathering will bring together the heads of G20 space agencies, leading international organisations, and senior industry figures to deliberate on the role of the space economy in addressing global challenges and advancing new opportunities.

Since its launch in 2020, SELM has established itself as a premier forum for dialogue and collaboration among established and emerging space-faring nations. The series has been hosted by Saudi Arabia (2020), Italy (2021), Indonesia (2022), India (2023), and Brazil (2024). Each edition has highlighted the strategic importance of space technologies in supporting sustainable development, fostering innovation, and strengthening global partnerships. Additionally, this will mark the first time the event has been held in Africa.

South Africa’s Role in the Global Space Economy

Under South Africa’s chairmanship in 2025, discussions will centre on the theme: “Space as a Catalyst for Inclusive Global Economic Development: Policy, Partnership and Prosperity.” The agenda will explore how space science, technology, and innovation can contribute to shared priorities, including climate resilience, digital transformation, socio-economic progress, and environmental stewardship. For South Africa, hosting SELM is both a milestone and an opportunity. Furthermore, it highlights the country’s growing presence in the global space economy, while providing a platform to showcase its national capabilities, scientific expertise, and commitment to international cooperation.

The three-day programme will feature policy dialogues, technical exchanges, and engagements with industry, aimed at producing actionable recommendations for consideration by G20 leaders. The meeting will also open avenues for South African researchers, innovators, and enterprises to interact with international counterparts, advancing new partnerships and collaborations. The conclusions of SELM6 will be integrated into the wider G20 agenda, reinforcing the recognition of space as a vital driver of economic growth, sustainability, and global cooperation.
