The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency in Morocco is preparing to grant licenses to SpaceX’s Starlink and OneWeb, allowing them to offer satellite internet services in the country beginning in 2025. Should this proceed, Morocco would be among the first North African countries to activate Starlink’s LEO (low-Earth orbit) satellite network, potentially setting a precedent for other nations in the region.

The dual licensing aims to introduce competitive satellite broadband options, with both companies poised to offer varied price points and service models. This competition could improve internet accessibility and affordability across Morocco, giving consumers the flexibility to choose between service providers best suited to their needs.

This licensing move supports Morocco’s “Digital Morocco 2030” strategy, designed to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure and facilitate widespread internet access. Enhanced connectivity is expected to drive Morocco’s ambition to become a leading digital centre in Africa, supporting socioeconomic growth, expanding digital literacy, and improving access to information nationwide.
