The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has officially launched the inaugural Nigerian Satellite Week 2024, which will run from October 16 to 19 in Abuja. This first-of-its-kind event aims to bring together key stakeholders, including industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators, to explore the latest advancements and future opportunities in Nigeria’s burgeoning space and satellite industry.

Under the theme “Empowering Nigeria’s Digital Future: Innovation in Satellite Technology and Entrepreneurship,” the event focuses on satellite technology’s role in driving digital transformation and fostering national development. In addition, the four-day event features keynote addresses, panel discussions, exhibitions, and a tour of NIGCOMSAT’s headquarters, led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Day 1 – Press Day Highlights

Day 1, themed “Harnessing Communication Satellites for Sustainable Development,” saw cross-industry stakeholders come together to discuss satellites’ critical role in national progress. Mr Timothy Ashong, Director General of the Regional African Satellite Communication Organisation (RASCOM), and other dignitaries highlighted the importance of satellite technology in addressing Africa’s communication challenges.

During the press briefing, the NIGCOMSAT Managing Director, Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen, emphasised that the Nigerian Satellite Week seeks to raise awareness of how satellites can contribute to national development, communication, security, and global competitiveness. Furthermore, Mrs Egerton-Idehen disclosed how Nigeria’s satellite resources are being deployed to combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. Collaborations with the Office of the National Security Adviser, Defence Intelligence, the Defence Space Administration, and other agencies have been initiated to improve safety and connectivity across the nation, particularly in remote areas.

Mrs Egerton-Idehen noted, “Though I cannot provide all details, our collaborations are comprehensive, aimed at outfitting our security agencies with the best satellite resources available. Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in West Africa’s satellite capabilities, and we are committed to this journey.” Furthermore, Mr Abiodun Attah, NIGCOMSAT’s Executive Director of Technical Services, echoed these sentiments, detailing how NIGCOMSAT supports the military in remote or challenging regions. Thus, he highlighted that several technologies have been deployed, though specifics remain confidential due to security concerns. He reaffirmed that NIGCOMSAT is vital in improving communication in difficult-to-reach areas.

In additon, Mrs Egerton-Idehen confirmed the government’s commitment to acquiring NIGCOMSAT-1R’s successor, the Satellite-2, with procurement plans progressing. Additionally, significant strides have been made in connecting Nigeria’s 774 local government areas to digital communication centres, with about 40 local governments already linked.
