GMES and Africa Kicks off the Inaugural Forum of Phase Two

The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa has kicked off proceedings from the first forum of its second phase of operations. The event began today in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and will run for four days, concluding on November 30, 2023. The forum will centre on strategies for utilising “Earth Observation for Resilience and Innovation in Africa” to advance socioeconomic development.

At its core, the forum is an inclusive platform, convening stakeholders from diverse sectors to delve into substantial discussions on leveraging Earth Observation (EO) services and applications. The focus rests on harnessing EO’s potential to bolster effective environmental management and sustainable resource utilisation, all geared toward advancing human development in Africa. Furthermore, the forum is a critical nexus for sharing knowledge, strategies, and insights, unifying voices to propel a more resilient and innovative Africa.

The agenda starts with a presentation by Dogbeda Yao Azumah, the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Communication Officer at the University of Ghana, offering an overview of the GMES & Africa programme through statistics and visual representations.

Following this, opening statements will be delivered by prominent figures: H.E. Christian Berger, Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Egypt; H.E. Prof. Mohammed Belhocine, AUC’s Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation; and H.E. Prof. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of The Arab Republic of Egypt.

Dr. Mahama Ouedraogo, former Director of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (ESTI), will highlight GMES and Africa’s 17-year journey and its significant milestones to set the stage. Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, the GMES & Africa Programme Coordinator, will outline the forum’s objectives and expectations.

Throughout the day, keynote speeches and panel discussions will explore various facets, emphasising the role of Earth observation in achieving sustainability goals in Africa. Furthermore, the forum will underscore GMES and Africa’s pivotal role in coordinating efforts and minimising duplication within the industry.
