According to the press release by the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), the agency and the National Earth Observations and Space Secretariat (NEOSS), in partnership with the South African Air Force (SAAF), co-hosted the National Space Conference from August 30 to September 1, 2023. Themed “Space for Inclusive Growth,”  the conference was held at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) International Convention Centre in Tshwane, Gauteng, South Africa. It brought key stakeholders and experts from the space industry together to explore the transformative potential of space for fostering inclusive growth.

Furthermore, delegates who attended the conference were opportuned to share their expertise and exchange ideas with other space professionals as well as gain insights into recent developments in the space industry, such as the cutting-edge air and space technologies that could benefit South Africa, through a series of engaging keynote presentations, panel discussions, informative showcases, technical sessions, and networking events. The conference also featured various exhibitors from the space sector, further enhancing the collaborative and learning experience for all participants.

The National Space Conference also allowed delegates to gain advanced knowledge about space applications, infrastructure, operations, products and services to enable better decision-making and advance society, the economy, and the environment.

According to Mr Mudau, SANSA’s CEO, “Investment in space science and technology supports the objectives of the government and every citizen in addressing national challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality through the development of policy strengthening tools and products, necessary skills through human capital development and nurturing of a transformed and growing space industry. In addition, success in space developments and activities requires strong strategic partnerships. We must continue enhancing our capability to produce and manage earth observation data. This will support South Africa in its efforts to increase food security, implement water management plans, lessen the impact of climate change and solve many other challenges for the society. We must also keep making data available for better decision-making.” 

Recent conversations within the Air and Defense forces have highlighted the importance of integrating technology within the security sector, particularly in its alignment with space technologies and innovations. Furthermore, the National Space Conference (NSC) organising committee expressed the magnitude of positive comments from the academia, industry stakeholders, and the government regarding the conference. The feedback underscores the collective aspiration to enhance South African society and the economy, enabling them to compete in the global space arena effectively.
