The Federal Executive Council of Nigeria has authorised the research and development of the Satellite Internet Broadband Project, which is projected to create at least 10,000 jobs while simultaneously generating NGN 28 billion in revenue. This project is owned by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).

This project will provide internet connectivity to remote areas in Nigeria, which will be a marked improvement from the current 0.2% broadband penetration in Nigeria. This will improve access to uninterrupted internet connectivity in the country. The project is expected to run over 15 years and has the greatest potential to bring about economic stability.

The benefits of this project extend to aiding in disaster management, climate change mitigation, and improving the state of health services in rural Nigeria. In terms of the implementation model, the proposed concession will be carried out using the Design, Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer (DFBOT) PPP model. In addition, the preferred bidder for the Project is Messrs Gilat-Eleo Consortium (GO360). The government of Nigeria has in the past emphasised the benefits of collaboration through the coordination of the public and private sectors.

Lastly, it is expected that the concession will target the deployment of 7,000 very small aperture terminals (VSATs) within the next two years.
