Algeria to Establish USD 7.7 Million Space Communications Centre

Algeria’s Minister of Posts and Wire and Wireless Transport, Mr Said Ali Zorouqi, inaugurated the USD 7.7 million (DZD 1 billion) Algeria Space Communications Centre, a facility intended to reinforce the resilience of Algeria Telecom Satellite’s national space telecommunications infrastructure. The laying of the foundation stone took place on 15 November 2025 at the Bogzol site in Al-Madiyah Province.
Situated next to the Algerian Space Agency, the centre’s location was carefully considered for several factors, including low seismic risk, strong terrestrial connectivity enabled by dense fibre-optic networks, and reliable highway access via the Shafa–Bogzol corridor, which further enhances its strategic value and positions the site within an emerging cluster of national space assets.

Beyond its technical rationale, the project signals Algeria’s intent to reinforce the resilience of its space communications architecture through its dedicated investment. The development is expected to generate employment during both construction and long-term operations, while anchoring wider economic activity in the region. More broadly, it marks a substantive step in enhancing the robustness and sustainability of Algeria’s satellite communications services, an increasingly critical capability as the country expands its digital and strategic infrastructure.
In addition, the new centre, covering 30,000 square metres, will enhance the operational capacity of Algérie Télécom Satellite (ATS), providing critical support for its current national communications satellite, ALCOMSAT‑1, and ensuring readiness for its follow-up, ALCOMSAT‑2.
