In a significant milestone for Poland’s space sector, the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) will return to the country in 2027, over six decades after hosting the prestigious event in 1964. The announcement was made during the IAC 2024 in Milan, securing Poland’s place as the venue for the world’s largest space event, which will take place in the city of Poznań.

Efforts to bring the IAC back to Poland spanned nearly two years, culminating in a vote by more than 500 members of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) during this year’s congress. In addition, major national organisations, including the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, the European Space Foundation, the Polish Space Agency, and the City of Poznań, supported the successful bid.

The 78th edition of the IAC, expected to draw over 10,000 participants, will be centred around the theme “One Space. Shared Future.” The phrase underscores the global unity that space exploration fosters, transcending national boundaries and emphasising collaboration. Łukasz Wilczyński, President of the European Space Foundation and Chief Executive of the Local Organising Committee, emphasises that this theme carries special relevance in today’s geopolitical climate.

Poland’s Rising Role in the Space Sector

Poland’s selection as the host for IAC 2027 underscores its increasing prominence in the global space sector. The country is experiencing rapid growth in space activities, contributing to scientific and technological advances. The space industry is crucial in various sectors, such as agriculture, environmental protection, and emergency management, making satellite data essential for administrative efficiency and national security.

“This is a remarkable achievement for Poland, reinforcing our country’s growing role in space exploration,” said Krzysztof Paszyk, Minister of Economic Development and Technology. Professor Grzegorz Wrochna, President of the Polish Space Agency, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Poland’s leadership role within Central and Eastern Europe’s burgeoning space industry.

Poznań: The Ideal Host

Poznań’s excellent infrastructure, strategic location, and experience in hosting large international events made it the ideal choice. “With 15 modern exhibition pavilions, a congress centre, and ample hotel accommodations, Poznań is the perfect partner for this global event,” said Tomasz Kobierski, President of the MTP Group, the city’s leading trade fair organisation.

Furthermore, an extensive coalition, including key government ministers, space agencies, and leading organisations across Europe and beyond, supported Poland’s bid to host the IAC. Their collective efforts underscored the importance of this event, not just for Poland but for the broader Central and Eastern European region, which is emerging as a hub for space innovation.

As the world looks forward to the 78th International Astronautical Congress, the event promises to highlight Poland’s growing influence in space exploration while fostering global collaboration. The two countries share a vision of a united and prosperous future in space.
