Chinese satellite operator Geespace, a subsidiary of Geely Holding Group, continues to expand its footprint in the African satellite market by signing agreements with Algeria and Morocco. These partnerships aim to strengthen Algeria’s domestic satellite capabilities and support Morocco’s development of satellite services and applications, underscoring Geespace’s broader push to deploy low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology for commercial and institutional purposes.

Expanding Geespace’s Presence in North Africa

In December 2025, Geespace signed a cooperation agreement with Algerian entities to advance Algeria’s capabilities in satellite IoT services, low-Earth orbit satellite production, and broader technological self-reliance. Among these, an agreement with Algerian Télécom Satellite (ATS), signed by ATS Director-General Toufik Hentabli and Geespace CEO Wang Yang, establishes a framework for co-developing the commercial and operational terms of a future satellite IoT investment and deployment project in Algeria.

The initiative will roll out in a series of sequential and complementary phases. Depending on the project’s progress and market potential, it may expand into other African countries later. Furthermore, this partnership aligns with Algeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, particularly efforts to strengthen nationwide connectivity and modernise industrial, agricultural, and logistics sectors using satellite-enabled IoT solutions.

The second agreement was signed between Algeria Space Agency Director-General Azzedine Oussedik and Geespace leadership, focusing on manufacturing cooperation for low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. The partnership aims to deepen technical collaboration, support advanced satellite production processes, and build local capabilities that could position Algeria as one of Africa’s emerging leaders in satellite technology. Reports also suggest the cooperation may extend to establishing a satellite manufacturing facility and a research and applications center, aimed at anchoring Algeria’s domestic aerospace industry and developing local human capital.

These initiatives align with Algeria’s broader ambitions to strengthen its domestic space capabilities and develop greater technological self-reliance in satellite technologies. Through the partnerships, the country is expected to explore new applications of satellite connectivity in sectors such as telecommunications, infrastructure monitoring, and logistics.

Expanding Satellite Applications in Morocco

In 2025 Geespace signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Morocco’s Soremar Group in Casablanca to advance the deployment of GEESATCOM satellite communication services across Morocco and the wider North African region. Additionally, the agreement focuses on promoting the commercialisation of Geespace’s low-Earth orbit satellite network and expanding its applications across regional connectivity and digital infrastructure markets.

Soremar, a major player in Morocco’s maritime and satellite communications sectors with a strong presence in marine electronics and satellite connectivity services, will support the initiative through its established market reach and operational expertise. Through the partnership, the two companies plan to collaborate on constellation system testing, market expansion, and scenario-based applications, while integrating GEESATCOM services into sectors such as transportation, energy, and agriculture to support Morocco’s broader digital transformation.
