Algeria has taken a significant step toward strengthening its satellite technology capabilities after two of its key institutions, Algeria Télécom Satellite (ATS) and the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL), signed separate memoranda of cooperation with China’s Geespace. The partnerships are designed to advance Algeria’s ambitions in satellite IoT services, low-Earth-orbit satellite production, and broader technological self-reliance.

The signing ceremony took place during African Telecommunications Day, held alongside the 4th African Startups Conference in Algiers, and drew several high-level attendees, including Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, and the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, Dong Guangli.

Expanding Satellite IoT Services Through ATS-Geespace Partnership

ATS, a subsidiary of the Algerian Telecom Group specialising in satellite telecommunications, formalised the first memorandum with Geespace. The agreement, signed by ATS Director-General Toufik Hentabli and Geespace CEO Wang Yang, establishes a framework for co-developing the commercial and operational terms of a future satellite IoT investment and deployment project in Algeria.

The initiative will roll out in a series of sequential and complementary phases. Depending on the project’s progress and market potential, it may expand into other African countries later. Furthermore, this partnership aligns with Algeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, particularly efforts to strengthen nationwide connectivity and modernise industrial, agricultural, and logistics sectors using satellite-enabled IoT solutions.

ASAL-Geespace MoU to Accelerate LEO Satellite Manufacturing

The second memorandum, signed between ASAL Director-General Azzedine Oussedik and Geespace leadership, focuses on manufacturing cooperation for low-orbit (LEO) satellites. The partnership aims to deepen technical collaboration, support advanced satellite production processes, and build local capabilities that can position Algeria as one of Africa’s emerging leaders in satellite technology.

This collaboration is expected to unlock new opportunities for innovation, local resource utilisation, and industrial advancement, contributing to Algeria’s long-term goal of developing competitive domestic expertise in space systems.

Strengthening Algeria–China Space Cooperation

Geespace, part of China’s Geely Holding Group, is known for its high-reliability LEO satellite constellations, manufacturing capabilities, and satellite-based mobility solutions. It’s growing cooperation with Algeria reflects the broader strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in space, telecommunications, and industrial development.

For Algeria, these agreements add momentum to its efforts to modernise national space infrastructure, enhance technological sovereignty, and diversify the applications of satellite technologies, from IoT and smart mobility to agricultural monitoring and national security support.
