Eratosthenes Centre for Excellence and CRTEAN Sign MoU to Strengthen Regional Collaboration in Remote Sensing in the EMMENA Region

In a significant step towards fostering regional cooperation in remote sensing, the Eratosthenes Center for Excellence at the University of Cyprus of Technology and the Regional Remote Sensing Center for North Africa (CRTEAN) have signed a memorandum of understanding. This partnership aims to establish CRTEAN as a pivotal link between North African nations and the countries of the Middle East and Southern Europe,  reverberating the success of the Tenth International Conference on Remote Sensing and Environmental Information (RSCy2024) held in Paphos, Cyprus, on the 8th and 9th of April, 2024.

The agreement was signed by Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis, the Director General of the Eratosthenes Center and a professor at the University of Cyprus Technology, and Dr El Hadi Kachouh, the Director General of CRTEAN. The collaboration promises to catalyse innovative endeavours and further the frontiers of remote sensing technology across the regions.

Furthermore, by leveraging the two institutions’ collective expertise and resources, the collaboration aims to foster groundbreaking advancements in remote sensing applications, data analysis, and environmental monitoring. Through this joint endeavour, researchers and scientists from North Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Europe will have the opportunity to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, share knowledge, and tackle pressing environmental challenges that transcend geographical boundaries. The agreement paves the way for collaborative research initiatives, faculty and student exchanges, and dissemination of best practices in remote sensing methodologies.

Moreover, the partnership holds the potential to contribute to capacity building and knowledge transfer, empowering local communities and stakeholders with the tools and expertise necessary to address region-specific environmental concerns effectively. By harnessing the power of remote sensing technologies, this collaboration aims to provide valuable insights into areas such as natural resource management, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
