Highlights Of The ITU Satellite Application Training And SADC Capacity Building Workshop In Luanda, Angola

The 3rd Edition of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Satellite Applications Training Workshop and SADC Satellite Sharing Program Launch began yesterday and will run till the 17th at the Talatona Convention Hotel (HCTA) in Luanda.
The event, holding for the first time in Angola, is a platform for forum specialists from various areas to share knowledge about satellites and ways of managing and allocating frequencies.
In his welcome address, INACOM’s PCA, Eng. Leonel Augusto, thanked the SADC Secretariat for their efforts towards organising the groundbreaking event in Angola and welcomed participants to the workshop.
The official opening ceremony of the event had segments coordinated by the SADC Secretary for Technology and Innovation, Dr George Ah-Thew; the Director-General of the National Space Program Management Office, Eng Zolana Rui João and S.Secretary of State for Telecommunications, Eng. Mário de Oliveira, who represented the S. Excia. Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Dr José Carvalho da Rocha.
In his speech, Eng. Mário de Oliveira stressed the importance of these meetings, saying it will allow the stakeholders to improve communication for the country’s populations more quickly, thus providing sustainable development for the continent in general and the region in particular.
The event attendees include experts and delegates from Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Malawi, among other Southern African Development Community member countries (SADC), national mobile operators and telecommunications institutions and academics in Angola.
The training aims to empower member countries of the SADC region on satellite communication tools provided by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to ensure the interests of the countries of the region. For Angola, the objective is to train national radio frequency technicians to make the best use of satellite communication tools.
On the course of events, experts from the International Telecommunication Union from Geneva, Switzerland will coordinate sessions of the satellite application training. The SADC Secretariat will handle other discussions on SADC Satellites Sharing Program with the participation of representatives from member states.
The 5-day workshop will also deliberate on features such as the SADC satellite systems-oriented tools by the ITU General Secretariat, governance issues, cost-sharing models, principles on how the satellite and network would be shared and the structure of involvement. A visit to Funda’s Satellite Control and Mission Center (MCC) is also scheduled.
The meeting is organised by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology and held by the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN) in conjunction with the Angolan Communications Institute (INACOM).
