The Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) and SkyWin Aeronautics Industry have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishing a cooperation framework to strengthen Ethiopia’s aeronautics technology capability, drone research and development, and aerial survey services. SSGI announced the agreement on 28 October 2026.

According to SSGI, the MoU covers cooperation in aeronautics technology development, drone design and manufacturing, aerial surveying, research and development, system testing and verification, and human resource development and technology transfer. The two institutions will also provide training for professionals, exchange experience and knowledge, and work to translate research outputs into practical solutions.

Dr Sisay Tola, Deputy Director General of Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service, attended the signing ceremony. He said the agreement creates an opportunity to turn research outputs into tangible products and services by combining the two institutions’ capacity, knowledge, human resources and technological assets. He added that joint research, manufacturing, testing and training projects should be implemented with a clear division of labour, coordinated leadership and a results-oriented approach, and that implementation should begin quickly.

Dr Abdisa Yilma, Director General of SSGI, said the agreement is highly significant for national prosperity, indigenous technological capacity building, and the growth of the aeronautics sector. He said the value of the cooperation will be measured by the technology solutions it produces, the human capacity it develops and its contribution to national development, and he reaffirmed SSGI’s commitment to the partnership.

For his part, Dr Solomon Guade, General Manager of SkyWin Aeronautics Industry, said the company will work to ensure the cooperation moves quickly from paper to implementation and delivers tangible, sustainable results.
