The Third Steering Committee Meeting- Support to Satellite Navigation in Africa

The third meeting of the Steering Committee for the Support of Satellite Navigation in Africa (SatNav Africa JPO) was held in Brussels on February 27 and 28, 2024. The meeting was opened by Mr Hans Stausboll, the Director representing Africa from the European Commission (EC), along with Dr Kamugisha Kazaura, Co-Chair of the African Union Commission (AUC) Infrastructure and Energy Development Department.

Furthermore, Dr Tidiane Ouattara, present as Head of ESTI’s Science, Technology, and Space Division and Chairman of the African Space Council, highlighted the significant progress made in the achievements of the SatNav Africa JPO and emphasised the importance of developing more substantial synergies with other space programmes.

In addition, other areas of discussion include innovative strategies, seamless coordination methodologies, and how Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) enable users to determine their position, velocity, and local time by processing signals emitted by satellites in precise locations in space. Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) enhance the performance of the GNSS system by improving attributes such as accuracy, integrity, continuity, and availability, making it suitable for various sectoral applications such as aviation, agriculture, maritime transport, and geomatics.
