AUC, GSSTI and JPO Awareness Workshop on Space Positioning Navigation and Timing in Africa
AUC and EGNOS Africa Joint Programme Office (JPO) with Ghana (Space Science and Technology Institute GSSTI) as the Host Country are co-organizing a high-level workshop on the Implementation of Satellite Positioning and Navigation Services in Western and Central Africa, in Accra from 22 to 23 February 2021.
The central theme of the workshop is “Space Positioning and Navigation & Timing Solutions: challenges and opportunities in Western and Central Africa” and will be gathering Country Experts from various space-related institutions in the two Regions
This collaboration is part of the ongoing initiative by AUC and JPO to raise and enhance awareness as well as the engaging AU Member States and Stakeholders in the West and Central Africa Region with regards to Space Positioning, Navigation and Timings (PNT) Solutions. Fostering the awareness beyond Aviation native Sector (SBAS) and development in Africa of Satellite Positioning and Navigation Services is key to AU Space Policy and Strategy implementation, as well as the Agenda 2063
Says AUC Director, HRST, Dr Mahama ‘This is the first of African Union regional series of high- level Awareness Workshops to be organised and will be encompassing all Economic Sectors which may benefit from the Space PNT technologies. This Activity is also supporting one of the four building blocks of the AfSA Strategic Domains.
And JPO Director to thank Ghana and GSSTI for the hosting of the Workshop under this difficult pandemic period with all necessary sanitary and safety conditions required.
JPO is a Pan-African “instrument” whose goal is to coordinate and assist African States in the implementation of programmes related to GNSS/SBAS Service implementation for all types of Space-based applications including in Aviation, maritime, surveying, road, and railway transport sectors among others. The Programme rooted in the ongoing framework of Joint Africa- EU Strategy on Satellite Navigation was set up in 2013 and is located in Dakar, hosted by ASECNA
