Multichoice Partners with Amazon and Netflix in a Surprising Deal

MultiChoice, the South African based company that operates the DStv Satellite Television service, a major satellite TV service in Sub-Saharan Africa, has announced a new partnership deal with Amazon and Netflix. The partnership will involve Netflix and Amazon including their streaming service into the satellite television network: this is an unusual move considering that both Amazon and Netflix are competitors to the satellite TV giant.
MultiChoice Chief Executive, Calvo Mawela while announcing the deal mentioned that “We need to start preparing ourselves to make sure we become the platform of choice for people to consume these services. If you are a one-stop-shop where they can get all of this…we position ourselves very well in the market for us to gain customers”.
MultiChoice was formed out of the subscriber-management branch of the M-Net Terrestrial Pay-TV company and broadcasted the full range of M-Net channels on the DStv service. The services have since expanded.
Netflix Inc. is an ever-growing streaming platform, while the Amazon Prime Video is a competitor. Multichoice has operated its streaming platform, Showmax. With the collaboration, all service providers will reach an even wider audience, possibly for lesser rates, controlling the industry and taking maximum profits from other competitors like the HBO.
MultiChoice’s Satellite TV, DStv currently serves about 20 million households across 50 South African countries. With the new partnership, the numbers are about to rise.
