African Astronomical Society Signs MoU with the European Astronomical Society to Strengthen Africa–Europe Partnership

The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) and the European Astronomical Society (EAS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen scientific collaboration between the African and European astronomical communities. Signed in June 2026 by Professor Amare Abebe, President of the African Astronomical Society, and Dr Sara Lucatello, President of the European Astronomical Society, the agreement establishes a framework for long-term cooperation to advance astronomy through joint scientific engagement, capacity development, researcher mobility, and collaborative initiatives.
The partnership reflects the shared commitment of AfAS and EAS to strengthening links between astronomers across Africa and Europe while advancing excellence in research, education, innovation, and scientific exchange. It also supports both societies’ strategic objectives to strengthen international collaboration and create new opportunities for their members.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, AfAS and EAS will work together to expand human capacity development in astronomy through the bi-directional exchange of students, researchers, and senior scientists. The partnership will encourage joint participation in African Union and European Union programmes, including scientific exchanges, mobility initiatives, and collaborative funding opportunities. It will also promote collaboration on astronomy infrastructure projects for the mutual benefit of both continents and strengthen networks that improve access to funding opportunities, research calls, and collaborative programmes and events.
Key Features of the Partnership
One of the key features of the partnership is to solidify the joint Africa–Europe sessions at the annual meetings of both societies on alternating years. These sessions will provide an important platform for scientists, policymakers, and early-career researchers to exchange ideas, develop collaborations, and discuss priorities for advancing astronomy across both regions. Recognising the importance of nurturing the next generation of scientists, AfAS and EAS will also explore opportunities to establish a travel grant programme that supports collaboration between early-career African astronomers and their European counterparts.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks an important milestone in strengthening scientific collaboration between Africa and Europe. The partnership represents another important step towards growing astronomy across both continents by expanding opportunities for researchers, building scientific capacity, and creating lasting scientific partnerships. It will provide a platform for stronger scientific collaboration, support researcher mobility, and create new opportunities for both African and European astronomy communities.
This MoU is more than a formal agreement; it reflects the shared vision of AfAS and EAS to build an inclusive, globally connected astronomy community that advances scientific excellence, strengthens international cooperation, and supports the next generation of astronomers. Together, the two societies are building a future where astronomy serves not only as a tool for exploring the Universe but also as a catalyst for innovation, education, and societal development.
