ASTRO GATE, AfriOrbit Ltd, and Hayes Group International have signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the shared goal of jointly promoting the development of a commercial spaceport in Kenya.  The MoU sets out a framework for cooperation across several key areas. It includes identifying and evaluating potential spaceport sites within Kenya and engaging and coordinating with relevant ministries, regulatory authorities, and other public stakeholders. The parties will also undertake feasibility studies that address technical, economic, and environmental considerations. Furthermore, the MoU encourages the exploration of partnership opportunities with launch service providers, satellite operators, and other actors within the broader space industry.

Furthermore, this collaboration aims to support advancing space-related infrastructure and the broader space industry across Africa. By leveraging their expertise and resources, the three companies will work together to progress a long-envisioned spaceport initiative rooted in Kenya’s geographic and strategic potential. This initiative gained further traction following high-level discussions during the 2025 NewSpace Africa Conference held in Egypt in April 2025, where ASTRO GATE’s President, Dr Daisuke Ode, and CEO, Mr Yuki Harada, met with Mr Meshack Kinyua, CEO of AfriOrbit Ltd., and Ms Selina Hayes, CEO of Hayes Group International. Commenting on the development, Dr Daisuke Ode, President of ASTRO GATE Inc., said:

“We are truly honoured to take the first step toward a spaceport project in Kenya through this collaboration with AfriOrbit and Hayes Group International. Kenya holds tremendous potential to serve as a strategic hub for Africa’s space industry, thanks to its geographical advantages. Through this partnership, we aim to contribute to sustainable and forward-looking growth in the region.”

Mr Yuki Harada, CEO of ASTRO GATE Inc., noted that the partnership represents a meaningful step toward bridging Africa, Asia, and the global space sector through collaborative development. He emphasised that ASTRO GATE is committed to building infrastructure and enhancing local expertise and talent sustainably and inclusively. Through this partnership, the company hopes to co-create a space industry with communities in Kenya and beyond. He expressed confidence in the initiative’s potential to contribute to Africa’s future and the broader progression of the global space economy.

Additionally, Mr Meshack Kinyua, CEO of AfriOrbit Ltd., remarked the following:

“The idea of an equatorial spaceport has been gathering dust for years. We are making a bold step to realise the dream. The Kenyan Equatorial Spaceport brings relief to the space community, many of whom have been waiting to deploy their spacecraft and satellites but have been hindered by limited launch windows and cadence. With the Kenyan Equatorial Spaceport, we create the nexus between science and safari. It is where the scientific community, indigenous communities, and nature will co-create and co-exist in a true ecosystem. Everyone will have a sense of identity every time a rocket takes off from the spaceport.”

Ms Selina Hayes, CEO of Hayes Group International, stated:

“From workforce development to manufacturing and, ultimately, to launch, we are laying the groundwork for an extraordinary journey that blends cultural heritage with cutting-edge technology and the development of the next generation of space engineers. The Kenyan Equatorial Safari Spaceport represents more than just the launch of rockets; it embodies the fusion of local ecosystems with the vastness of space exploration. We are committed to enabling Access to Space for All, ensuring that every Kenyan and African can look up to the stars and know that they too can reach them.”

It is important to note that this MoU does not constitute a legally binding agreement. Rather, it establishes a foundational framework for future cooperation. The parties intend to continue discussions to conclude a formal agreement based on more detailed considerations.
