Nigeria and Russia to Collaborate on Space Technology

Nigeria is partnering with the Republic of Russia to advance its socio-economic development in the fields of space technology, agriculture, Science, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Permanent Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology In Nigeria, Mrs Esuabana Nko Asanye, announced the joint initiative to continuously strengthen the bilateral relationships between the two countries in these crucial sectors.
Additionally, Mrs Esuabana indicated that operating such scientific disciplines cannot be done in isolation, signifying the importance of such international partnerships in strengthening national development. The announcement was made during a visit of a Russian delegation from the Russian Embassy led by the Senior Counselor on Trade and Economic Section, Sergei Pliushchov, who visited Mrs Esuabana in Abuja.
During the discussions, Mrs Esuabana Asanye further emphasised that the Ministry is interested in facilitating scientific training and research opportunities in Russia, specifically in Space Technology. This would happen if the Russian government would sponsor such opportunities. She further acknowledged Russia for its proactive support and interest towards the development of Nigeria. Russia’s Sergei Pliushchov further expressed its commitment to training and retraining its scientific professionals to improve the country’s development. He also mentioned that through its Embassy in Nigeria, the Republic of Russia collaborates with Russian online experts to enhance Nigerians’ technical skills across various fields.
These efforts further align with Nigeria’s ambitions to build human capacity in the space sector. During an exclusive interview with Space in Africa, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Director General indicated that capacity building and knowledge transfer are key pillars of building Nigeria’s space ambitions. He further stated that through international partnerships, equipping the space workforce will be a key driver for innovation and development.
