The Acting Director General of the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), Brigadier (Brig) Hillary Kipkosgey, hosted the Mayor of Marineland, Florida USA, Angela Tenbroeck, at the agency’s office, in Nairobi, Kenya. The Mayor, who was visiting the country in her capacity as the Lead of Urban Agriculture, Agriculture, Agro-Ecology, and Land Use Management of the Office of the Mayor of Jacksonville, discussed the extensive use of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools in her work in the US for advisory purposes, including tracking of Green House Gas emissions, urban development, and flood early warning systems, among others.
The Mayor was joined by Teddy Warria, Director of Climate Advocates Voces Unidas (CAVU), Technical Advisor Engineer Felix Kariuki, and the founders and board members of Ohanna Educational Center, based in Nairobi. The CAVU team shared their work on Climate Education and organising the Climate Innovation Challenge for schools.
The Climate Innovation Challenge seeks to enhance the younger generation’s participation in addressing environmental issues and climate change through their local innovative solutions in science, engineering, entrepreneurship, and cultural change.
The Acting Director General of the KSA briefed the Mayor and her team on the Agency’s ongoing initiatives, focusing on those aimed at schools.
Future Goals and Strategic Directions for the Space Club
The Space Club focuses on four main themes: Earth Observation, Space Systems Engineering, Space Science and Astronomy, and IT and Robotics. KSA has released the first edition of Space Club books on its website and is now developing the second edition.
The Acting Director General thanked the Mayor, CAVU, and the Ohanna Educational Center team for visiting the Agency. Moresoever, he stated that KSA was keen to collaborate with institutions working towards similar goals, especially in engaging students in GeoSTEM-related programmes.
