According to the Russian Academy of Sciences Vice President Sergey Chernyshev, during the Russia-Africa Summit, the Russia Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics (KIAM), has handed over the ground-based optical-electronic system for tracking space debris objects to the Nigerian National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and is building another one in Tanzania.

Furthermore, the tracking stations will enable Russia and its partners to thoroughly assess data acquired from observing space debris. This capability is crucial for safeguarding against artificial hazards and researching near-Earth space. Recently, Russia inaugurated its Optical and Electronic Complex for Detection and Measurement of the Movement Parameters of Space Debris (OEC DSD) in South Africa. 

The establishment of tracking stations in Nigeria, Tanzania, and South Africa, such as the Russian Optical and Electronic Complex for Detection and Measurement of the Movement Parameters of Space Debris (OEC DSD), signifies Russia’s efforts to enhance its capabilities in tracking and observing space debris. These tracking stations will allow Russia and its partners to comprehensively evaluate data obtained from observations of space debris and play a critical role in promoting the peaceful use of outer space.
