Mauritius to Sign Framework Agreement with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre

In a news release by Space Mauritius, the Ministry of Information Technology, Communications and Innovation, responsible for space development initiatives in Mauritius, plans to sign a Framework Agreement with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), UAE. The agreement entails ensuring significant space development and satellite technology-related R&D growth.
The first Mauritian satellite project, MIRSAT11, assisted the country in obtaining basic knowledge and skills for building, deploying and controlling a 1U cube satellite in space. In less than ten years, Mauritius has been able to groom its outer space interests and establish a space presence. This step has been widely recognised globally and has created new avenues for R&D in space and satellite technologies in the country.

Furthermore, the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) has initiated several courses of action to ensure the growth of its space sector. For example, MRIC is partnering with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to trail one of their satellites launched in November 2022, harnessing the sophisticated ground station established for the first Mauritian satellite. In addition, the MRIC also partnered with Surrey Space Centre at the University of Surrey, UK, to examine how to operate the latest satellite data, using Artificial Intelligence to track illegal fishing vessels in their EEZ.
