The Inaugural Kenya Space Expo & Conference 2022 Kicks Off Today

The inaugural Kenya Space Expo & Conference 2022 (KSEC2022) has kicked off today at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. For the next two days, the conference will feature several activities and programmes to explore and showcase the benefits of space applications for Kenya’s socio-economic development. In addition, the event will bring together industry players in an interactive forum that showcases current projects, innovations and provides an opportunity for linkages and collaboration.

The conference, themed “Leveraging Space Capabilities for National Development”, was built on the success of the Space Sector High-Level Forum held on the 25th of February 2021, which received commendation across the continent for promoting the engagement and in-depth discussion of issues and ideas in the space sector.
Furthermore, the conference aims to nurture and promote the development of an indigenous space industry that is robust, innovative, competitive and responsive to the needs of the country and provide a platform for enhanced collaboration among space professionals, experts, researchers, from public and private sectors as well as students and civil society.
In addition, the scheduled activities will include keynote speeches, plenary sessions, breakout sessions, panel discussions, and exhibitions. The conference will feature discussions across the space industry segments – Earth observation, Navigation and Positioning, Satellite Communication, Space Science and Space Systems Engineering – through the following six cross-cutting themes:
- Policy, strategy, law and regulation;
- Capacity building with a focus on academia and the space sector;
- Application of space technologies for socio-economic development;
- Partnerships, funding and resource mobilisation;
- Private sector’s role, challenges and opportunities; and
- Future of the industry.
Expected Outcomes
The Kenya Space Expo & Conference 2022 will enhance Kenya’s awareness of space science applications, policy, and regulatory instruments needed to develop a sustainable community of practice for deeper integration of the space industry into the mainstream economy. Also, it is expected that the conference will lead to the discovery and identification of Kenyan space capabilities, including data, infrastructure and human capital development and potential use of space applications and tools for the sustainable socio-economic development of Kenya. In addition, the conference will provide an avenue for understanding space-related international treaties, conventions and other instruments viz-a-viz their impact on decision-making.
